World number 2 Carlos Alcaraz blamed the speed of the court after his shocking defeat to Ugo Humbert in the 2024 Paris Masters round of 16. This is one of the rare excuses we have heard from the Spanish Superstar, who is normally humble and respectful in defeat. It is a very strange statement given by the 21-year-old star after one of his disappointing losses this season where he failed to make it to the playoffs of the tournament.
The Paris Masters will now go into the quarter-finals and so far the results have been really surprising this season with a lot of high-seeded players getting eliminated in this last ATP Masters 1000 tournament of the season. One of the most shocking defeats came in the Round of 16 when Carlos Alcaraz lost to a lower-seeded player in Ugo Humbert in a 3-set match.

Carlos blames the court
There is no doubt that this is one of the most disappointing defeats for Alcaraz who is still one of the top-seeded players in the tournament and is the current World number 2. However, the statement he gave after his defeat is something that we do not expect to hear from him at all as he says, " This court… I mean, I don’t want to say something that there is going to sound like an excuse, First of all, Ugo deserves to win, that’s obvious, but it depends. Because I play, for example, the Davis Cup indoor court and the court was way slower than this one."
This is a very shocking statement by the 4-time Grand Slam Champion who is normally very humble in defeat in these circumstances. Apart from this Alcaraz has gone on to compare the courts as well stating further " When I played the first match, the stats came out that it is the fastest court in the Masters 1000, probably on the tour right now. This is crazy. I don’t know. Probably and the fastest one, you know, in the last ten years in this tournament. So I don’t know why they do it. We get that Alcaraz is disappointed after the loss, but unfortunately, this excuse by him will still give a wrong impression of him to everyone.
