The winners since 2007

Looking back at the winners of the last 17 years is something to look at as this is also another tournament that leads up to the upcoming Roland Garros. It was Rafael Nadal who won his third consecutive title in 2007 this winning streak from El Nino went on for the next two years which was another five-year winning streak for the king. The streak was broken the following year as Nadal withdrew from the tournament in 2010 and the winner turned out to be his fellow countryman Fernando Verdasco who beat Robin Soderling in the final. Nadal then came back to take the title in 2011 and won three back-to-back titles once again winning his 8th title in 2013.

The following season saw Nadal losing to Nicolas Almagro in the quarter-finals ending another dominating winning streak and Barcelona saw another new champion in 2014 in the form of Kei Nishikori who went on to defend the title in 2015 as well. 2016 saw Nadal once again take back the Barcelona crown and win 3 consecutive titles once again and win his 11th title in 2018. 2019 saw the streak broken by Dominic Thiem who announced himself on the stage after beating Nadal in the semi-finals and going on to win the tournament after beating Daniil Medvedev in two straight sets in the final. The 2020 season was cancelled due to the pandemic, but it was Nadal who came to the party once again winning his 12th title in 2021 after beating Stefanos Tsitsipas. The next two years saw another Spaniard rule the game this time in the form of Carlos Alcaraz who won back-to-back titles in 2022 and 2023. Overall it was another tournament ruled by Nadal, but also gave us some new stars in the making as well.
