Tennis players Aryna Sabalenka and Paula Badosa have recently talked about their perspectives on equal prize money in tennis.
All four Grand Slam tournaments have offered equal prize money for men and women since 2007, though inequalities remain between the ATP and WTA Tours.
Aryna Sabalenka and Paula Badosa gives their verdict on equal prize money
Paula Badosa accepted the historical origins of the gender pay gap but showcased that tennis has become more entertaining. The 27-year-old tennis star highlighted the intense, thrilling competition and unpredictability in women's tennis, contrasting it with the dominance of stalwarts like Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, and Novak Djokovic.
“My opinion is that we always have to accept that sports was made a long time ago for males but that’s a long time ago...Like you start hundreds of years ago, but i think we are in another century right now and sports and life has evolved so much," Paula Badosa said.

On the flip side, Aryna Sabalenka feels that men's tennis is at a higher level due to their physical abilities but stated that women make more sacrifices compared to men. The star player is gearing up to play her first round of the Qatar Open 2025, a WTA 1000 level tournament, where she is a former champion, while Badosa is the ninth seed.
Despite the WTA 1000 being a higher-caliber showpiece event than the ATP 500 event that follows in Doha, the women's champion is set to receive $80,835 more than the men's champion. The WTA is working towards equal prize money at a combined 1000 events by the end of 2027.
"We have to agree that the men’s level is always going to be higher just because of their physical abilities and strength, but it doesn’t mean that women are not working the same way. I think we sacrifice much more," Aryna Sabalenka said.
