The Italian Open is almost in its final phase and we have witnessed one of the most iconic tournaments we could ever think of. There have been a lot of great matches that have excited all the tennis fans right now. Though there have been a lot of stars who have featured in this tournament and have played some great tennis, there have also been some surprising results that none of us saw coming at all.

It is always great to see some of our favourite stars play their best game, but we will be talking about the player who we never thought would get that far in the tournament. These individuals have proven that the game of tennis can be as unpredictable as any other sport in the world. We will be looking into the players who have gone on to give possibly one of their best performances in their careers right now.

So, here are the top 5 players who have surprised us in the current Italian Open right now:

5. Paula Badosa

badosa

There might have been a lot of people who might think that Paula Badosa has already been a top 10 player and it was not a big surprise to see her make the fourth round of the tournament. However, we have to remember that she had just come back from injury and has not had the best of luck when it comes to WTA 1000 tournaments. This was one of her best performances this season and she was competitive in every match she played including the game against world number 3 Coco Gauff during which she suffered a hard-fought loss.

4. Thiago Monteiro

monteiro

Thiago Monteiro has probably had one of his best two tournaments in which he has featured in. It is always rare for a player who has come into the main draw through qualifiers and has gone as far as the Brazilian. Monteiro after beating an in-form Stefanos Tstsipas in Madrid once again went to beat another experienced and former world number 10 ranked player in Gael Monfils. Thiago made it into the fourth round which is an achievement for any unseeded player in an ATP 1000 tournament.

3. Nicolas Jarry

Nicolas Jarry has always been one of the players who had a lot of potential but has failed to live up to it on most occasions. The Chilean surprised everyone by making it to his first ATP 1000 semi-final. Though it was a slightly easy draw for Jarry he proved to everyone that he was a deserving player after beating the Greek God Stefanos Tsitsipas in the quarter-finals. Jarry has not won a single ATP 1000 title and he would like to make it his first and show everyone what he can achieve in his career.

2. Tommy Paul

Tommy Paul might be one of the most exciting American players known for his all-out aggressive approach, but he was still not considered one of the top contenders in the tournament. The injury in Miami did not really help his cause as well. However, in this tournament, he has been one of the main attractions to watch out for where he has beaten two top 10 players Hubert Hurkacz in the quarter-finals and defending champion Daniil Medvedev in the fourth round as well. This was Paul at his best where he never gave any of his opponents a chance to get ahead and made it to the semi-finals of the tournament.

1. Alejandro Tabilo

If you thought that Jarry was one of the most surprising players from the Latino South American nation, you were still yet to witness the performances of Alejandro Tabilo. There is no doubt that Tabilo was not given a chance to even make it through to the 2nd round of the competition, but he did something which all players can only dream of. Tabilo has been the biggest surprise package in the Italian Open where he beat the odds not only by beating the world number 1 Novak Djokovic in the third round, but he is also a semi finalist. He is having one of his best seasons so far and looking at his dominant performances there is no doubt he could be one of the people that could still give us surprises in the upcoming matches where he will be up against some top players once again.
