Will Ospreay entered the 2025 AEW Owen Hart Cup Tournament after defeating Kyle Fletcher in a brutal cage match at AEW Revolution. On this week's AEW Dynamite program, Ospreay and Tony Schiavone did an in-ring promotional. Ospreay said that his wife was upset with him for taking so many chances and jumping off the top of the cage and that he was hurt in his battle against Fletcher.

Ospreay stated that he required championship gold around his waist to satisfy his desire to be "the guy" in AEW. He said that the world championship picture was congested, pointing out that Swerve Strickland will be vying for the belt at the Dynasty PPV, while Cope will face Jon Moxley the following week.

Will Ospreay lost to Strickland last year

Will Ospreay inquired as to whether he needed to call his shot before focusing on the arena's All Out banner. In the main event of that show this summer in Texas, Ospreay stated that he was calling his shot for All In and that he intended to compete for the title. Ospreay claimed that winning the Owen Hart Cup Tournament was the only way he could do that. Ospreay then made an official tournament declaration.

In AEW, the Owen Hart Cup Tournament is now held annually. Bryan Danielson defeated Swerve Strickland for the championship at All In after winning the tournament the previous year. Ospreay lost to Strickland in last year's Forbidden Door, his only previous attempt at the AEW World Championship. He has held the titles of IWGP World Heavyweight Champion and two-time AEW International Champion.
