Cope claimed he was a part of numerous matches for the world title in the last 32 years as a wrestler. He felt his match against Moxley could be his last for the world title. Adam Copeland felt the need to make it count as he wasn't sure if life would give him another chance. His statement went viral on X, Instagram, and other social media platforms.
"I've been in hundreds of world title matches over the last 32 years. I know that this could be the last time I ever fight for a world title. So, I have to make this count," Cope said. In an interview with The Takedown on SI, Cope spoke about his match with Moxley. The veteran said neither he nor Jon expected their match.
'I don't think any of us ever expected' - Cope on his match with Jon Moxley
Cope felt no one thought one would see a match between Cope and Moxley one day. He said the way their match became a reality was surprising. When Edge returned to WWE in 2020, Moxley had made his move to AEW. When Jon was in WWE as Dean Ambrose from 2012 to 2019, Edge was out of the company.
"It's a first-time match that I don't think any of us ever [expected]. Even when I first came back to WWE, you wouldn't think, 'Oh yeah, you'll get a Copeland and Moxley at some point.' It just wasn't going to be the case, and now it's possible," Cope said in the interview.
Cope added that the opportunity for his match against Jon came as the latter was the world champion. He felt a babyface like him could make a strong opponent for a heel like Moxley. Cope said he always appreciated Jon for his work and style.
