The 2019 PKL champions Bengal Warriors are setting their sights on redemption in the upcoming season after a disappointing run in the past three editions. Despite their strong legacy since their debut in 2014, where they made the playoffs in four seasons, the Warriors have struggled to regain their former glory. However, with strategic moves in the PKL 2024 Auction, the team is poised for a comeback.
One of the standout decisions in the auction was the addition of Fazel Atrachali to the Warriors' defence. Known for his formidable skills on the mat, Atrachali was secured for a significant sum of INR 50 lakh. Atrachali's experience and leadership are expected to bring a much-needed boost to the Warriors' backline, making them a more formidable opponent in the upcoming season.
Another crucial move by the Bengal Warriors was the retention of their captain, Maninder Singh, using the Final Bid Match (FBM) option. Maninder, one of the most prolific raiders in PKL history, was retained for INR 1.15 crore. His presence is vital not only for his scoring ability but also for his leadership on and off the mat.
Can the Bengal Warriors make a comeback?
The squad for the 2024 season is a balanced mix of seasoned campaigners and young blood. Alongside Maninder Singh, the raiding department includes Chai-Ming Chand, Akash B Chavhan, Arjun Rathi, Pranay Vinay Rane, Vishwas S, Nitin Kumar, and Maharudra Garje.
On the defensive end, apart from the star recruit Fazel Atrachali, the team boasts players like Nitesh Kumar, Mayur Kadam, Praveen Thakur, Sambhaji Wabale, Hem Raj, Vaibhav Garje, Shreyas Umbardand, Aditya Shinde, and Dipak Shinde.
As the 2024 season approaches, the Bengal Warriors are armed with a well-rounded squad that combines experience with youthful exuberance. With the right mix of leadership, talent, and strategic planning, they are well-positioned to make a strong push for the playoffs and beyond. Fans and critics alike will be keenly watching to see if the Warriors can indeed turn the tables and reclaim their status as PKL champions.
