Gujarat Giants coach Ram Mehar Singh has shed light on the reasons behind the team's decision to part ways with their former captain, Fazel Atrachali. The Giants surprised many by not retaining Atrachali and further raising eyebrows by choosing not to re-sign him using their Final Bid Match (FBM) card during the auction.

In a recent interview, Singh expressed his thoughts on why the team decided to move on from Atrachali. He acknowledged Fazel's significant contributions to the game, referring to him as a "very good player" and a "star" in the league. However, Singh emphasized that every player has a prime, and he believes that Fazel's best days might be behind him.

"I believe that Fazel Atrachali is a very good player. He is a star player, but every player has his prime. Now, Fazel's reflexes are no longer the same. The youngsters are doing their best, perhaps better than Fazel. There is no doubt that no defender comes close to Fazel's experience, but there is a time for every player," Singh told Sportskeeda.

"In the previous season, somewhere I felt that his speed, his reflexes, his reaction abilities have reduced. Those things bothered me. Hence, I have decided to give a chance to new players," Singh stated.

Fazel Atrachali has a lasting legacy

Atrachali, who has cemented his legacy as the most successful defender in PKL history, managed to score 62 tackle points in 23 matches last season. Despite his efforts, Singh believes that the younger players in the squad now have the potential to outshine the seasoned veteran. While Fazel finished 13th in the defenders' leaderboard and led the Giants to the playoffs, Singh felt it was time for the team to look towards the future.

This season, Fazel Atrachali will be taking on a new challenge as he dons the Bengal Warriorz jersey. Singh’s comments reflect a broader strategy of rejuvenating the squad with fresh talent, signalling a new era for the Giants as they head into the 2024 Pro Kabaddi season.
