A'ja Wilson scored 21 points, and the United States women's basketball team won 67-66 against France at the Paris Games on Sunday, overcoming the hardest hurdle of its record run to eight consecutive Olympic gold medals. No team has been able to challenge the Americans during their amazing 61-game winning streak. Before the game against France, just two of those triumphs were by single digits.

Eight golds in a row ended a tie with the American men's program, which won seven consecutive golds from 1936 to 1968. Less than 24 hours had passed since the American men's team defeated France in the championship match before the women's triumph. The same two teams competed in both gold medal games for the first time in Olympic history.

The terrifying US team was on the verge of one of the all-time Olympic upsets, but they triumphed 67-66 to win gold for the record-breaking eighth time in a row, bringing them even with China's 40 gold medals.

This game, unlike the men's, came down to the last minute, with France making a last-second jumper that was just within the 3-point arc. Kahleah Copper's two free throws gave the Americans a 67-64 lead with 3.9 seconds left. Marine Johannes sent the ball up the court to Gabby Williams, who collected it just inside the 3-point line and banked in over Breanna Srewart's outstretched arms for the final margin.

The US regained the lead, and in a thrilling finish, with France leading 67-64, Gabby Williams sank a buzzer-beater, but it was determined to have come from inches inside the three-point line, resulting in a one-point victory for the United States. LeBron James, the NBA great and US men's gold medalist, was on the floor, while French President Emmanuel Macron cheered on the hosts from the stands.

There was a slight wait before the authorities announced that it was a two-point shot, which sparked a celebration and many joyous hugs from the Americans while leaving the French players stunned as they fell just short. A'ja Wilson, who ended with 19 points, had made a long three only seconds before Copper's free throws to get France within one.
