In a devastating turn of events, Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat's dreams of Olympic glory were dashed when she was disqualified from the Paris Olympics. Despite a valiant effort to make weight for her 50 kg gold medal, Phogat could not meet the required limit, leading to her disqualification on the morning of the crucial match.

The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) confirmed the news, expressing deep regret over the situation. "Despite the best efforts by the team through the night, she weighed in a few grams over 50kg this morning. No further comments will be made by the contingent at this time. The Indian team requests you respect Vinesh’s privacy," the statement read.

The disqualification is particularly heartbreaking as Phogat had defied the odds to become the first Indian woman wrestler to reach an Olympic final. Her path to the gold medal bout was nothing but remarkable.

She stunned the world number one, Japan's Yui Susaki, and followed it up with tactically brilliant victories over wrestlers from Ukraine and Cuba. These victories had positioned her as a strong contender for the gold medal, making the disqualification all the more painful.

Sources close to the situation revealed that Phogat was just 100 grams over the permissible weight limit, a minor but crucial difference that sealed her fate. The rules of the competition require wrestlers to stay within their weight category on both days of the event.

Despite intense physical activity, Phogat fails

Although Vinesh Phogat had successfully made weight for her initial bouts, she struggled to maintain it overnight. It is understood that she was approximately 2 kilos over the limit on Tuesday night and worked tirelessly, forgoing sleep, to try and shed the excess weight. She reportedly engaged in intense physical activity, including jogging, skipping, and cycling, in a desperate bid to cut.

The Indian delegation even pleaded for additional time to allow Phogat to shed the final 100 grams, but the request was denied, and the rules were strictly enforced. This is not the first time Phogat has faced challenges with gaining weight in the 50 kg category, which is lower than her usual 53 kg class. She encountered a similar struggle during the Olympic qualifiers but narrowly managed to meet the requirement.

Phogat's disqualification means that the 50 kg category at the Paris Olympics will now only have gold and bronze medalists, with no silver awarded. For Vinesh Phogat, this disqualification is a bitter end to what had been an inspiring journey, leaving the Indian contingent and fans across the country deeply disappointed.
