Chelsea suffered a 2-0 defeat to Manchester City on the first matchday of the Premier League at Stamford Stadium, on Sunday (August 18). Apart from the Blue’s failure to get off the mark, another topic of discussion was the absence of star forward Mykhailo Mudryk from the game.

Mudryk started on the bench and remained on the sideline for the entire 90 minutes of the game. It was quite a surprise to see the Ukrainian professional as an unused substitute. Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca faced a question about Mudryk’s in their opening match.

The 44-year-old said picking a team for the Premier League was always difficult. Maresca added that many other players like Mudryk who deserved to play were sitting on the bench and he had to make a decision.

“It has been difficult to pick the starting 11 because there are players on the bench who deserve to play such as Misha, but you have to make decisions,” the Italian said.

Defending champions start new campaign on high

Defending champions Manchester City got their new campaign off to a strong start with a 2-0 win over Chelsea on Sunday night. It was the Norwegian superstar Erling Haaland who broke the deadlock in the 18th minute to give his side an early lead.

The West London club amped their efforts in the second half but they failed to level the score. Just when it seemed like City would close the encounter with a 1-0 win, Mateo Kovacic provided a brilliant finish by netting in the 84th minute. Chelsea could not even get a consolation goal after and the treble winners emphatically sealed the game.
