After being left out of Manchester United's game against Newcastle United on Sunday, goalkeeper Andre Onana has come under increasing pressure. Ruben Amorim, the head coach, gave an explanation for his choice to bench the Cameroonian player after his team lost again.   Onana was not even on the bench at St James' Park, despite receiving more and more criticism for his subpar play since coming from Inter Milan for $61 million last summer.

Rather, Altay Bayindir received an uncommon start.   This choice backfired as the team lost to Newcastle United by 4-1 due to costly errors in the game. Amorim has said that after a challenging performance against Lyon in the UEFA Europa League last week, he felt compelled to let Onana "disconnect" before letting him go.   Speaking to Sky Sports before the match, Amorim defended his decision to give Onana some rest, stressing the significance of controlling a player's mental health.

Onana has been the target of harsh criticism following his Europa League errors against Lyon. Both supporters and analysts have criticised Onana for his many errors since taking David de Gea's place at United. Onana vs Lyon? You guys have to wait, I'm going to choose the best starting XI for the next one," Ruben Amorim said after Newcastle United's loss.

Manchester United faces Olympique Lyonnais with aim to win

Amorim changed his starting lineup five times, perhaps in anticipation of Thursday's pivotal Europa League quarterfinal second leg against Olympique Lyonnais, as United are currently headed for their lowest-ever Premier League season point total.  With the loss, United tied the amount of league games they lost during the 2023–2024 season with their 14th league loss of the year.

The club's situation was further compounded by the fact that United supporters had thought Bayindir would cover up Onana's errors from the last game. The only chance this season for Manchester United to win a trophy is the UEFA Europa League. Winning the second leg will be a difficult task for United as the score on aggregate is 2-2.
