Barçelona's first-choice goalkeeper, Inaki Pena, was benched during their semi-final fixture against Athletic Club. The Catalans emerged victorious as they humbled Athletic Club 2-0 to make their way into the finals of the Spanish Super Cup.
Hansi Flick reveals the reason for benching Inaki Pena
Inaki Pena faced disciplinary action from Barcelona manager Hansi Flick as he was dropped for the Spanish Super Cup semi-final against Athletic Club due to his tardiness at a pre-match session. Flick had previously punished Jules Kounde for the same offence earlier in the season.
During the pre-final press conference before Barcelona’s match against Real Madrid, Flick addressed the importance of punctuality, noting that this season has seen similar issues.
“This is the third time this season a player has arrived late to a training session. They must be punctual—they are professional players. I had no other choice,” Flick stated.
His decision to emphasise discipline reflects his dedication to upholding professionalism. Barcelona aims for its 15th Spanish Super Cup title as they prepare to go head-to-head against their archrivals Real Madrid.
Despite the disciplinary measure already in place, Flick chose not to disclose the starting goalkeeper for the crucial match against Real Madrid at the King Abdullah Stadium in Jeddah. Both Peña and Szczesny have shown commendable performances in their recent outings, making the decision hinge on the tactical strategy for the final.
“I never reveal who will start. Both have had very good games, and it depends on what we plan tactically. I can’t say more. But I want to make it clear that there’s not as much noise as people think. Both are professionals, and there will be no issues,” Flick said, undermining any controversy.
Ancelotti supports Flick's decision
“The schedule is important, and the players have to be disciplined. The decision I make is that I want explanations for the delay. If the reason is acceptable, nothing happens, but if it is not, we take action.” Ancelotti said.
