Serhou Guirassy's record-breaking performance
Borussia Dortmund hosted Barcelona FC at Signal Iduna Park in the second leg of the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals. Barcelona came into the encounter with a healthy 4-0 lead, which they secured in the first leg.
Borussia Dortmund gave their best but couldn't deny FC Barcelona a spot in the semi-finals of the UCL. Borussia Dortmund defeated FC Barcelona 3-1 but lost the quarter-finals 3-5 on aggregate.
The star of the show at Signal Iduna Park was none other than Serhou Guirassy, who stunned the Catalans with a hat trick. He netted thrice in the 11th, 49th and 76th minutes. The Guinean forward was able to strategically exploit Barcelona's high-line defensive structure, which has been a headache for all the teams this season. However, his efforts didn't yield the fruit he desired as Dortmund fell short of scoring an equaliser on aggregate to force the matter into extra time and possibly penalties.
Guirassy's hat trick marked him as the first African player to score three goals in a single match during the quarter-finals or later in the Champions League. It also boosted his tally in the competition to 13 goals this season, the highest by an African player in a single campaign. Additionally, he became the first player from the continent to net three times against Barcelona in Europe's premier club competition.
The promising striker from the African continent has been the find for Borussia Dortmund this season. Guirassy has netted 28 goals this season in just 29 fixtures. He also stands as the highest goal scorer in this edition of the UCL. With Borussia Dortmund out of the UCL, he will now shift his attention to the Bundesliga, where his club sits at the 8th spot, well shy of a Champions League qualification spot.
