Pep Guardiola, Manchester City manager expressed concerns about his Manchester City squad as they faced mounting injury challenges following their Carabao Cup match against Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday night.
The team experienced their first defeat of the season, losing 2-1 to Tottenham despite making several lineup changes. Unfortunately, they lost two key players to injuries during the match—Manuel Akanji had to withdraw from the starting XI during the warm-up, and Savinho suffered an ankle injury and was stretchered off in the second half. Guardiola’s focus now will be on managing these setbacks and finding ways to adapt as they move forward.
Manchester City in Trouble
Manchester City is currently in a dire situation with several key players benched due to injuries, including the likes of Kevin De Bruyne, Jack Grealish, and Kyle Walker. Hence as a precautionary measure, Erling Haaland was rested during Wednesday's match to prevent any potential injury risks.
In his post-match press conference, Guardiola acknowledged the difficulty of operating with just 13 available players, a situation the team has not encountered in his nine years at the helm. However, he believes that such challenges often bring the squad closer together, and the players are stepping up in this moment. The team is committed to maximizing their efforts this week and will focus on recovery to bounce back stronger.
"We are 13 players, so it's really difficult. I think we are in trouble, because in nine years we've never had a situation with many, many injuries. In these situations, the players make a step forward, they are more together than ever. They will try to do more this week with a short time for recovery." - Guardiola said.
Premier League defending champions have three crucial away matches ahead of the November international break. They will first visit Bournemouth on Saturday, followed by an important Champions League clash against Sporting CP in Lisbon three days later. Finally, they will conclude this segment of the season with a trip to Brighton. These games are key opportunities for the team to build momentum and secure vital points.
