Virgil van Dijk, the star player for Liverpool, has been under fire from the Dutch supporters on X after his lack of focus allowed Austria to win their Euro 2024 match. In an exciting match on Tuesday, June 25, at the Olympiastadion Berlin, Austria overcame the Netherlands 3-2.

Donyell Malen's own goal during the sixth minute gave Ronald Koeman's team a disastrous start. Soon later, he was found to have wasted a huge opportunity by missing the objective when in a favorable position. With a fantastic effort from Cody Gakpo in the 47th minute, the Netherlands replied admirably. But twelve minutes later, after a blistering counterattack, Romano Schmid knocked the ball home to give Austria the lead again. In the 75th minute, Wout Weghorst made a significant impact off the bench by helping Memphis Depay tie the score at 2-2.

Five minutes later, Austria left the Netherlands stunned, just when it appeared like they had a chance to steal the victory. Marcel Sabitzer was found by Christoph Baumgartner, who executed an outstanding through-ball that exposed the Netherlands' defense. Luckily, Van Dijk's bad positioning allowed him to be played onside, which allowed him to secure all three points through a superb finish.

By his high standards, Virgil Van Dijk's performance during the UEFA Euro 2024 match was below average as he found it difficult to handle his teammate's errors. In his ninety minutes on the field, the 32-year-old lost three duels and made zero tackles.

Netherlands finish third; set to face big teams in the knockouts

Ronald Koeman's Netherlands lost against Austria in Berlin due to a shoddy defensive effort, which prevented them from winning their group at Euro 2024. Austria's three points and France's tie with Poland meant that Ralf Rangnick's team had won their group. The other match in the group ended in a 1-1 draw with penalties converted by Robert Lewandowski and Kylian Mbappe respectively.

During the round of 16, the Netherlands will play the group winner, but they will have to wait to find out who that is. They might play England, who can defeat Slovenia to take first place in Group C.
