In the Bundesliga on Sunday, Victor Boniface's goal in extra time gave Bayer Leverkusen a 4-3 comeback victory against Wolfsburg. The German champion made another of its signature late comebacks ahead of their matchup with Bayern Munich the following week.

Granit Xhaka hit the goalpost with a looping attempt in stoppage time, giving Xabi Alonso's squad a glimpse of hope, but Boniface quickly put them ahead. After displaying remarkable skill in Leverkusen's 4-0 victory over Feyenoord, Boniface unexpectedly found space in a crowd of three opponents to turn and shoot past goalkeeper Kamil Grabara. Wolfsburg was down one player due to Yannick Gerhardt's red card. All of Wolfsburg's players were crammed into the penalty area.

It was Bayer Leverkusen's second overtime victory in four Bundesliga games this year. That came after its championship-winning season featured an almost amazing string of thrilling endings. To have a chance to win against Wolfsburg, Leverkusen had to rally twice from down by one goal. New signing of Wolfsburg took the lead thanks to an own goal by Nordi Mukiele in the fifth minute, but Leverkusen responded with goals from Jonathan Tah and Florian Wirtz, who scored his fourth in eight days.

Sebastiaan Bornauw and Mattias Svanberg gave Wolfsburg the lead once again before the break, but Leverkusen's defenseman Piero Hincapie tied the score with a header early in the second half. Leverkusen has scored 13 goals and allowed nine goals in their four Bundesliga games this season, including a thrilling 3-2 loss to Leipzig last month. Their games have been nothing short of fascinating.

Leverkusen is now three points behind Bayern Munich, who have won four of their last five league games under the direction of new coach Vincent Kompany, giving up only three goals while scoring 16 goals. With four Bundesliga games played so far this season, Xabi Alonso's team has given up nine goals in the league, making them the first defending champions to do so since Kaiserslautern in 1998–99.
