Liverpool defeated managerless Southampton 2-1 to go to the League Cup semi-finals. Darwin Nunez and Harvey Elliott scored rare goals at St Mary's to help the ten-time League Cup winners reach the last four for the twentieth consecutive year. Despite being beaten to an unexpected 2-2 draw against Fulham in the Premier League, Liverpool, who have only lost once since Arne Slot succeeded Jurgen Klopp at Feyenoord, got back on track last weekend with their 20th victory from 24 games across all competitions.
Slot chose to rest Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah as the Premier League leaders made eight changes. Slot was watching the quarterfinal from the stands while serving a touchline suspension. Nunez put a stop to his previous bad play with a precise finish after Jan Bednarek made a mess of clearing Trent Alexander-Arnold's ball in the 24th minute, but Liverpool's reserves were too strong for Southampton.Nunez, a Uruguay striker who has yet to score in six games this season, only managed four goals throughout all competitions.
Elliott's first goal of the season came in the 32nd minute when he sent a low shot past Alex McCarthy from 12 yards out, doubling Liverpool's advantage. Meanwhile as Liverpool returns to AXA Training Centre there was a surprise waiting for Liverpool players. Liverpool teammates Andy Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold exchange some interesting Christmas presents.
