Ousmane Dembele refused to take the award
The Ligue One Champions got off to a flying start at Villa Park almost putting an end to the contest when they netted two goals in the first half via Achraf Hakimi and Nuno Mendis. However, things took a drastic turn when Youri Tielemans scored his first for Aston Villa. John McGinn followed with a goal of his own to set an edge-of-seat-thriller.
Ezri Konsa's 57th-minute strike blew off Villa Park as the hosts got agonisingly close to drawing levels on aggregate. Aston Villa were just one goal away from forcing extra time on PSG who are touted to be the favourites this season.
Some controversy erupted when Ousmane Dembélé was named the official man of the match, overshadowing goalkeeper Donnarumma. The forward's expression was one of displeasure as he posed for the customary pitch-side photographs, gripping the prize tightly. He was spotted denying the award as he walked out of the pitch at Villa Park.
"We thought we were too good. At 2-1, we thought we were already qualified and that it was over,’ Dembele told the French television channel." Dembele said.
"That’s how the Champions League goes. You face teams whose supporters are as hot as that and they can turn the game on its head." He added.
The Ligue One winners are vying for a treble this season with the club being active across domestic and European competitions. Luis Enrique's side strives to be the first team in the history of the club to win the UCL.
