Nicko Sensoli’s second-half strike ensured that San Marino were able to register their first-ever win in a competitive fixture. They had to fight hard against Liechtenstein and were lucky that Fabio Notaro’s first half goal had to be ruled out. After Sensoli’s goal, all the eyes were on the defence to see them through to this rare achievement for their nation.

San Marino would now face Moldova on 10th September 2024 at the Stadionul Zimbru in Moldova. Next month, they would be travelling away to face Gibraltar and would look to seal three points in that encounter as well. If they can have a successful UEFA Nations League campaign, it can see them qualify from Grade D to Grade C for the next edition.

San Marino and Liechtenstein clashed for a UEFA Nations League D match at Stadio Olimpico di Serravalle on Thursday night, both hoping to record uncommon victories in competitive action. La Serenissima entered this game having shown some improvement over the previous 12 months, while the Blue and Reds wanted to win this match in order to accrue as many points as possible.

San Marino’s road to improvement over the past year

San Marino have so far in 2024 tested themselves in four friendlies spread across the March as well as June international windows, drawing once and losing three times, due to their failure to qualify to participate in this summer's UEFA Euro 2024 in Germany together with some of the continent's top member nations.

The country's serious and ongoing struggles on the international scene were highlighted by a 0-0 draw with CONCACAF minnows Saint Kitts and Nevis on March 24 in Serravalle. This was the first time La Serenissima had avoided defeat in a contest of any kind since the 1-1 draw at Saint Lucia in November 2022.

The last competitive action San Marino saw was during their UEFA Euro 2024 qualifying campaign, where the hosts on Thursday were, predictably, the whipping boys of a fiercely competitive Group H, staying on zero points and giving up an alarming 31 goals in ten games.
