Neymar Junior received marching orders for handball

Neymar was sent off in the 76th minute of the Brazilian Serie A match after he punched the ball into the net from inside Botafogo's box. The referee promptly disallowed the goal and issued a second yellow card to the former Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona star, eliciting frustration from the home crowd. Santos ultimately lost 1-0 in front of their own fans, with Artur Victor Guimaraes scoring the winning goal for Botafogo in the dying moments of the game.

Santos is at the helm of a difficult season, currently positioned 18th in the Brazilian Serie A table after 11 matches. Neymar has been sidelined due to injury for seven games and has not yet registered a goal or assist in the remaining four. Additionally, a suspension is now set to further limit his playing time.

Neymar is trying to save his international future after being omitted from Carlo Ancelotti's inaugural Brazil squad. Due to an impending suspension from a red card, he will have to wait some time before demonstrating to the new national team coach that he is in adequate shape for selection.

"I made a mistake, forgive me. Today, if I hadn't been sent off, I'm sure we would have gotten the three points. You can count these three points against me!" Neymar apologised for his act on social media.
