Athletic Bilbao entered the match sitting in fourth place in the La Liga standings and has been enjoying a strong season. In contrast, Espanyol found themselves in 17th place in the league table, struggling to find their form this season.

On one side, Athletic Bilbao looked to surge into the top three of the Laliga standings, while on the other side, the Catalan outfit had to play for their survival; being 17th placed, they were already in the relegation zone. Hence they couldn't afford to drop points in this fixture.

Both teams approached the match with caution, focusing on maintaining possession. Athletic Bilbao managed to hold the ball more frequently, yet they struggled to translate this dominance into clear scoring opportunities. Meanwhile, Espanyol looked to exploit counter-attacks. Despite their efforts, neither team was able to find the back of the net in the first half.

The deadlock was eventually broken in the second half during the 62nd minute when Roberto Fernández scored with a right-footed shot from very close range, finding the centre of the goal.

After scoring the goal Roberto Fernández pulled out the iconic 'You can't see me celebration' of 16-time WWE Championship John Cena.

Unfortunately for the hosts, their lead was short-lived, as the visitors equalized in the 77th minute. Oihan Sancet from Athletic Club found the back of the net with a right-footed shot from the centre of the box, directing it to the high centre of the goal. This goal was set up by Nico Williams, who provided a well-placed cross following a corner.
