The Premier League saw another important weekend of matches, highlighted by Brentford’s clash with Arne Slot's Liverpool at the Gtech Community Stadium on Saturday.
Liverpool entered the match as the table toppers and had shown great form this season. Despite this, they faced a tough time in their previous match, where they were held to a 1-1 draw by Nottingham Forest.
Brentford on the other side, sat in 11th place in the league table and had underperformed this season. They were hopeful to pull off a heist on the back of a strong performance against Manchester City.
The Tale of the Fixture
Liverpool started the game strong and enjoyed more possession and shots. Brentford, however, were compact in their defence and defended in low blocks. Liverpool came close to scoring multiple times; however, their lack of composure while finishing led to many shots flying high and wide.
Liverpool attempted an astonishing 31 shots but managed to keep just 6 of them on target, all of which were well-kept by Brentford goalkeeper Flekken. Liverpool created chances after chances but miserably failed to bury an opportunity cleanly.
Tsimikas and Jota teamed up to secure the equaliser against Nottingham Forest in Liverpool’s most recent league match.
It nearly occurred again in the 67th minute when Robertson delivered a well-placed cross from the right to an unmarked Nunez. Nunez leapt to connect with it but, unfortunately, directed his header wide of the left post.
In the 78th minute, Brentford threatened to rattle Liverpool. Wissa surged down the left flank, initiating a swift break. He delivered a precise cross to Mbeumo, who unleashed a powerful header aimed at the right post. However, Alisson was there yet again, positioned perfectly to deny the attempt.
Elliott-Nunez Duo breaks Brentford's heart
Tides finally turned in the injury time as Darwin Nunez came off the bench to hit back-to-back goals, thereby breaking the hearts of Brentford fans.
Elliott delivered a precise pass to Nunez inside the box, allowing Nunez to slot it home to the right of Flekken. Just two minutes later, the duo struck again, securing their second goal with great link up play.
