Real Madrid defeated Atletico Madrid in the Round of 16 of the Champions League. Thibaut Courtois and his teammates joyfully celebrated after the game ended in favor of Real Madrid. However, when Thibaut Courtois and his teammates were going into the tunnel towards the dressing room, some Atletico Madrid fans spat on their way.

Thibaut Courtois once again won the man-of-the-match award. With seven saves throughout the match, the Belgian goalkeeper ensured that Real Madrid advanced to the quarterfinals via penalties. Courtois wouldn't be too upset about this. Although the match hadn't involved any controversy.

Real Madrid eventually defeated Atletico Madrid on penalties after the tie ended 2-2 overall. Shortly after missing a vital penalty that would have given Real Madrid the lead, Vinicius was replaced.

Some Atletico supporters allegedly yelled insults at the Brazilian as they were making their way to the dugout. Vinicius responded by making a provocative gesture that infuriated the home crowd by reminding them of Real Madrid's 15 Champions League victories. The drama continued after that. Julian Alvarez's spot-kick being denied during the penalty shootout was one of the most controversial moments.

During his shot, Alvarez slipped, causing a double touch that resulted in the cancellation of his penalty.  Many Atletico Madrid supporters argued that Alvarez should have been given another chance to score, and the VAR's decision to deny the goal infuriated the stadium and fans on social media. Real Madrid's defense stayed strong despite Atletico's early momentum from Conor Gallagher's goal in the second leg.  

Real Madrid's place in the quarterfinals, where they will play Premier League powerhouse Arsenal, was guaranteed when Antonio Rudiger scored the game-winning penalty.  Atletico Madrid's Champions League season was once again ended by Real Madrid on Thursday, further solidifying their supremacy over their city rivals in Europe.
