The hosts got a perfect start in the match as Gallagher netted the first goal within 27 seconds of starting whistle. In the process, he became the first English player to score in the Madrid derby. Real Madrid dominated possession and shots throughout the fixture but failed to breach Atletico's defence structure.

In the second half, Real Madrid received a golden opportunity to take the lead on aggregate when Kylian Mbappe was fouled in Atletico's box in the 70th minute. Vinicius Junior took charge of the spot kick but skied it past the goalpost. Julian Alvarez remained a constant threat as he tested Thibaut Courtois throughout the fixture.

Neither of the teams was able to score the winner in the extra time, dragging the match to the penalties. Both teams scored their opening kick, however, things took a drastic turn for Atletico Madrid as Julian Alvarez took charge. The Argentine initially netted the ball despite slipping while making an attempt, but following a VAR check, the goal was disallowed as he touched the ball twice while making an attempt.

Hence, Los Blancos took the lead in the penalty shootout. Federico Valverde increased the lead by converting the next kick for Madrid. Atletico got a bit hopeful when Oblak stopped Lucas Vasquez's attempt, but Marcus Llorente failed to score Atletico's subsequent penalty.

Antoine Rudiger shouldered the responsibility of Madrid's next penalty with a spot in the next round at stake. Rudiger converted from the spot and began celebrating with his trademark run. The entire team mimicked Rudiger's run while celebrating the thrilling victory. Real Madrid are set to face Arsenal in the quarter-finals of the Champions League after the international break.
