Copa del Rey's finals concluded at Estadio de La Cartuja with FC Barcelona emerging victorious with a 3-2 scoreline over Real Madrid. In a violent clash that saw the two rivals compete against each other, situations got out of hand towards the end of extra time.
Despite Real Madrid's best efforts, Barcelona reigned supreme for the third straight time in this season's El-Classico. Things turned ugly when the referee was close to making the final whistle.
Antonio Rüdiger attempts to assault the referee
In a match that saw over 10 bookings, which included 7 yellow cards and 3 red cards, Real Madrid's defender Antonio Rüdiger turned villain in the last minute of extra time. He attempted to assault the referee on the football pitch. In a moment of emotional outburst, Rudiger threw a bottle towards the referee on the pitch while the play was in progress.
The referee dodged the bottle and ran towards Antonio Rüdiger to show him a red card. The moment enraged the defender as he was barely held back by one of his team officials as he went forward to assault the referee. Rudiger was accompanied by Vinicius Junior in the incident. The German has faced extensive backlash from the football community following the disgraceful incident.
Earlier, both Barcelona and Real Madrid were levelled at 2-2 in regulation time with goals from Pedri and Ferran Torres for Barcelona. Kylian Mbappe and Tchouameni were the scorers for Real Madrid. Jules Koundé scored an exceptional long-range goal in the 116th minute of extra time to win Barcelona their 32nd Copa Del Rey title.
With this Real Madrid's chances of winning at least one trophy this season went into a pitfall. They already trail by 4 points to FC Barcelona in Laliga. The next and final El-Classico of the season may prove to be the title decider for the Spanish top flight.
