The home team arrived with momentum, having recently achieved a thrilling 3-2 victory over Almeria in the Copa del Rey round of 16. With a slim three-point buffer above the relegation zone, Leganes was eager to build on their recent success and create a more comfortable position in the league standings.

However, Diego Simeon's Atletico Madrid looked to extend their lead at the top of the La Liga standings with another victory in this fixture.

Griezmann's missed penalty cost Atletico Madrid their winning streak

Leganes goalpost became the centre of attention in Atletico's performance during the first half, with Antoine Griezmann and Conor Gallagher joining Alvarez in hitting the frame of Marko Dmitrovic’s goal.

While they showed resilience to reach halftime unscathed, Leganes capitalised on an opportunity just three minutes into the second half to take a surprising lead at Butarque.

Former Manchester City star Nastasic broke free from his marker and powered a bullet header into the net from Dani Raba’s outswinging corner.

In the closing minutes, the visitors were granted a crucial opportunity when the referee, after a VAR review, correctly ruled that Sergio Gonzalez had handed the ball into the box.

The ever-so-dependent Antoine Griezmann took charge of the penalty but shockingly pulled his shot wide, much to the delight of the majority in attendance at the stadium.

That miss guaranteed Leganes a remarkable victory, adding to their triumph over Barcelona in December that propels them five points above the relegation zone. Additionally, Leganes also ended Atletico Madrid's impressive 79-match winning streak.
