This weekend, the Premier League witnessed an iconic showdown as Manchester City, under the guidance of Pep Guardiola, faced off against their fierce rivals, Manchester United, at the Etihad Stadium.
Sitting in 13th place, Manchester United had struggled to find their form this season. In contrast, Manchester City occupied the fourth spot in the league table but had yet to truly deliver on their potential this year. This encounter was not just pivotal; it was essential for both teams.
Manchester City had not met expectations this season and were in a tough battle to secure a top-four finish. With only one win in their last ten matches, their current form was downright miserable. On the other hand, Manchester United had demonstrated signs of a resurgence under Ruben Amorim and looked determined to make a statement going into this match.
Manchester United stuns the Champions
However, Manchester United didn't have the best start to the first derby of the season. One of their key midfielders, Mason Mount, had to limp off the pitch just twelve minutes into the game. Manchester City scored in the 36th minute as defender Gvardiol found the back of the net.
Manchester United chased the lead at Etihad up until the 88th minute of regular time. Nunes blundered by under-hitting a back pass that Diallo easily intercepted. He only worsened the situation by rushing back and taking down the United player just outside the box. Fernandes confidently converted the penalty while Ederson went the wrong way.
Fortunes shifted dramatically for United in the 90th minute when Martinez sent a precise long ball down the middle to Diallo. Diallo controlled the ball and deftly navigated around the keeper. He then confidently tapped the ball into the net from a tight angle.
