Mason Greenwood has attracted significant interest from two major European clubs following his transfer to Marseille at the beginning of the season. This comes after the former Manchester United academy prospect made an impressive start to his career in Ligue 1, having joined the club on a permanent deal at the start of the 2024-25 campaign.
The 22-year-old had completed a loan spell at Spanish side Getafe during the previous season. This followed a mutual agreement for Greenwood to leave United after the club's internal investigation into his conduct following his arrest in 2022.
The forward's transfer to Marseille was surrounded by controversy, with the city's mayor, Benoit Payan, openly opposing his signing before the deal was finalized.
However, since joining the team, Greenwood has become a key player under head coach Roberto De Zerbi and was awarded the club's Player of the Month for August after scoring five goals in his first three appearances.
It has been reported by the Sun that several clubs are interested in signing Greenwood, with Barcelona now entering the race to secure his signature. Barcelona is reportedly eager to prioritize bringing Greenwood to Camp Nou to strengthen their attacking options for the upcoming 2025-26 season. They are rumoured to be prepared to offer up to £60 million to bring him back to Spain.
It is possible that Hansi Flick and his team could encounter strong competition from a club closer to home, with a similarly impressive track record, namely Paris Saint-Germain.
PSG likely ahead in the transfer war
Reports suggest that the Ligue 1 champions have dispatched scouts to observe Greenwood's performance on the French Riviera. They will have the opportunity for a closer assessment when the two teams face each other at the Orange Velodrome at the end of the month.
Marseille's league rivals may hold an advantage over the LaLiga giants, partly due to their location. There are indications that Greenwood is interested in remaining in France if he decides to make a move in the summer.
