It was time for the marquee match-up of club football and the fixture each team looks forward to at the end of the season. It is none other than the UEFA Champions League final and this time the iconic Wembley stadium got the chance to host the mega event as Real Madrid battled out against Borussia Dortmund for the coveted trophy.
Not what everyone expected, Borussia Dortmund had the more clear cut chances in the first half and were giving a tough fight to the 14-time champions. Karim Adeyemi’s pace on the left wing was proving to be way forward for the German powerhouses as he got behind the Real Madrid defence on a number of occasions. He had an amazing 1v1 chance but didn’t have the composure after getting past Thibaut Courtois.
Niklas Fullkrug also had a great opportunity but his shot just skimmed the far post and went out of play. A bunch of yellow cards were also handed out for dissent and foul play and it seemed like the pressure of the final was getting to the players.
How did the second half of the UEFA Champions League final pan out?
The second half started with the same tempo with both teams looking to find the opener and break the deadlock here at the Wembley stadium. Borussia Dortmund dominated the possession early on in the second half and were looking to be the likely team to grab the lead today. But never count Real Madrid out as they got settled in the game and were starting to create chances. Bellingham, Vinicius Jr. and Rodrygo combined well with the midfield as they looked to get the opener.
However, it was the unlikeliest of the scorers who opened the scoring as Dani Carvajal headed the ball in from a beautiful cross from Toni Kroos. Ian Maatsen would be culprit as his lacklustre clearance gave the opposition a corner from which they converted to get the lead. Just minutes later, Jude Bellingham had a great chance to put the game to bed but his shot was blocked and the ball just missed the goal.
An error once again from Ian Maatsen gave the ball just outside the box to Jude Bellingham and the English playmaker passed it to Vinicius Jr with a shot at goal. The Brazilian scored and increased the lead for the Spanish giants and it seemed to be all over for Borussia Dortmund. Fullkrug got one goal back a few minutes later, however to their dismay the striker was deemed offside and it got ruled out. In the end, Real Madrid got the win and lifted their 15th UEFA Champions League title.
