'The Dutch March on!' - Fans react as Netherlands cruise past Romania in UEFA Euro 2024

Netherlands look like one of the firm favourites to lift the UEFA Euro 2024 and have dealt past Romania in their Round of 16 clash at the Allianz Arena in Munich.

Netherlands were able to comfortably march on into the quarter-finals of the UEFA Euro 2024 with a 3-0 win over Romania. Cody Gakpo scored the opening goal in the first half before Donyell Malenโ€™s brace settled the tie for the Oranje. They were tested on various occasions by the Group E toppers but were not clinically when required.ย 

After scoring the opening goal for his team in the round of 16 matchup versus Romania at the Allianz Arena in Munich, Cody Gakpo of the Netherlands became the most recent player to tie for the lead in goals scored at Euro 2024. Gakpo entered the penalty area after receiving the ball on the opposite side of the box. He kicked the ball with such force that it touched Romanian keeper Nita's fingertips and went in at the near post.

After netting twice during the group stages, the forward for Liverpool has now netted three goals during the tournament.Ivan Schranz of Slovakia earlier became the top scorer after netting in his team's round of 16 match at the Arena AufSchalke against England. In the race for the golden boot, Schranz is now deadlocked with Georges Mikautadze of Georgia and Jamal Musiala of Germany.

How did the game between Netherlands and Romania pan out?

When Romania gained the ball during the third minute of play, R Marin sent a cross into the center of the field from the right. Denzel Dumfries was also present, and he powerfully headed the ball out from the Romanian Ianis Hagi. Before the game resumed, Hagi went down clutching his head and the medical staff wrapped him.

Gakpo believed he had provided his side a two goal lead in the 62nd minute when he struck into the back of the net, but a VAR check disqualified the goal. When the last ball was played, the Liverpool player in question was offside when he lifted it over Nita. Donyell Malen sealed the deal with a brace and his side would now face the winner of the final round of 16 match between Turkiye and Austria.
