Chelsea fans were horrified to learn the number of matches Reece James would miss after getting sent off. After a poor season, Chelsea is on the verge of qualifying for Europe next season.

With a 2-1 victory over Brighton on Wednesday night, Mauricio Pochettino's side climbed up to sixth place in the Premier League table, securing a spot in the UEFA Europa Conference League playoffs. However, club skipper Reece James threw a damper on things as he received a straight red card after hitting out at Brighton forward Joao Pedro in the dying stages of the game.

James stepped off the bench during the 69th minute, making only his second start since a hamstring injury in December. He was quickly handed his marching orders, yet he now faces a four-game suspension that will extend into next season.

The English international will be serving the usual three-match punishment for aggressive conduct, plus an additional match since he was previously sent off once this season. James received two yellow cards during Chelsea's 4-1 loss to Newcastle United in November, one for booting the ball away and the other for dragging down Anthony Gordon.

James will consequently miss Chelsea's final game of the season against Bournemouth, as well as the first three matches of next  English Premer League season.

Mauricio Pochettino on Reece James getting suspended

Chelsea FC manager Mauricio Pochettino spoke to the media after the game and discussed the red card handed out to Reece James. He said, "Maybe it’s the frustration of him. But, yes, painful. Painful because it was a fantastic night of football and he’s our captain and a really important player. I’m disappointed because now he’s going to miss the next game and maybe a few games in next season."

Chelsea have to prevent defeat on Sunday in order to maintain sixth place, but they can move from sixth to fifth and qualify for the Europa League even though they defeat Bournemouth along with Tottenham lose against Sheffield United. James cannot play again until Gareth Southgate announces his preliminary England selection for Euro 2024.
