Kylian Mbappe makes a bold statement after missing a penalty

Kylian Mbappe shared his thoughts following his penalty miss during Real Madrid's 2-1 loss to Athletic Club Bilbao on December 4. Despite his efforts, he could not score in the La Liga match at San Mames, where Athletic Club ultimately secured all three points.

Bilbao tamed Galacticos

The first half saw both teams struggle to break the deadlock, but Athletic Club took the lead in the 53rd minute with a goal from Alex Berenguer. Real Madrid continued to press for an equaliser, and they got the opportunity of a lifetime when goalkeeper Julen Agirrezabala fouled defender Antonio Rudiger in the box but Kylian Mbappe bottled the opportunity from the spot for the second consecutive time in a week. Although Jude Bellingham led the comeback with a poacher's finish in the 78th minute, Guruzetta scored the winner in the 80th minute.

“Bad result. A big mistake in a match where every detail counts. I take full responsibility for it. A difficult moment but it’s the best time to change this situation and show who l am,” Mbappe said.

Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti has staunchly defended Kylian Mbappe following the team's defeat to Athletic Club Bilbao. It's important to highlight that the superstar's two missed penalties occurred at critical junctures for Madrid to equalize—once against Liverpool and again versus Athletic Club. On both occasions, he failed to convert and Real Madrid lost.

“I haven’t spoken to him (Mbappe). We missed the penalty, but I don’t have to evaluate a player’s game by the penalty, sometimes they score and sometimes they don’t. He’s sad but we have to keep going," Ancelotti said.

“He’s much more than at his 1%. He’s not at his best but we have to give him time. He has scored 10 goals. He can do better, of course, and he is working on it,” Ancelotti added.
