By promoting a campaign throughout this weekend's match broadcasts and on their social media accounts, LaLiga and its teams will contribute to the Red Cross's efforts to aid those impacted by the flash floods that have killed a minimum of 158 people in Spain. Additionally, Real Madrid declared that they will work with the Red Cross and contribute one million euros ($1.09 million).
Real Madrid issued a statement on their donation as they said, "The Real Madrid Foundation and the Red Cross have today launched a fundraising campaign to support those affected by the storm and the club have decide to support this campaign with a donation of one million euros to help the many families who are in a critical situation and need all our help and solidarity."
La Liga also published a small statement regarding the flood situation in the country and urged all the clubs to come together in this difficult time. It said, "Spain's professional football joins the condolences and expresses its solidarity with the families of the victims and the missing."
The Spanish FA urged competition organizers to observe a minute of silence before games that will be played as an homage to the deaths after postponing seven midweek Cup matches and all games planned for Valencia's eastern region over the weekend.
Valencia vs Real Madrid postponed due to floods
The lone Copa del Rey encounter without an alternative date is Real Sociedad's meeting versus Jove Espanyol in Alicante, while six postponed games have been moved to next week. Before next Tuesday, LaLiga requested that the ten impacted teams in the top two leagues submit a request for new dates.
The games that have been postponed include Valencia's La Liga match against Real Madrid, who are visiting, and Villarreal's match against Rayo Vallecano. Valencia has made the Mestalla stadium a drop-off location for food and necessities. It is great to see clubs helping out people who reside near the stadium in such turbulent circumstances.
