Raheem Sterling joined Arsenal as a player on transfer deadline day, but he will have to accept a different shirt number than the one he preferred.

Raheem Sterling surprised everyone by moving across London from Stamford Bridge to the Emirates Stadium on a loan from Chelsea. The transfer of the English forward to the Gunners was the result of Arsenal winning the deadline day battle, thereby ending his time at Chelsea.

Sterling's time at Chelsea became difficult after Pedro Neto's arrival led to him falling out of favour. His situation worsened when Enzo Maresca made it clear that he was not part of the plans for the season.

Sterling deprived of his Shirt Number

Arsenal took advantage of the opportunity late in the transfer window, reuniting manager Mikel Arteta with Sterling, with whom he had previously collaborated at City. Sterling's signing was announced by Arsenal just as the transfer window closed.

The 29-year-old has had to accept a different squad number at Arsenal following his loan move from Chelsea. This is because Bukayo Saka, a homegrown star, already wears the number seven shirt - the same number that Sterling had at Chelsea and previously at Manchester City.

One of the official announcements made from the side of the Gunners which was later deleted, teased fans with - "Get your Sterling No. 10 shirt now from Arsenal Direct".

Arsenal's Number 10 Jersey has a long and rich history, adorned by Club Legends like Dennis Bergkamp and Robin van Persie. Emile Smith Rowe was the last in the Reds to hold this number, which has been vacant for some time now.

Sterling Thrilled to Join the Gunners

After the completion of his transfer, Sterling expressed his delight by saying: "It's an unbelievable feeling. It's really exciting. I'm buzzing. It's one where we kind of left it late but it's one I was hoping for. Looking at everything, I'm just, like, 'This is a perfect fit for me', and I'm super happy that we got it over the line."
