Belgian footballer Romeo Lavia is expected to be sidelined for several weeks due to a muscle injury, which presents a challenge for Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca. The midfielder was unable to participate in Chelsea's 3-1 victory over Wolves, having sustained the injury during a prior match against Bournemouth.

The midfielder was unable to participate in training sessions last week, and on Friday morning, Maresca confirmed that he will be sidelined for “a few weeks” as he has not managed to recover.

Chelsea manager confident despite Lavia's absence

Lavia made only one Premier League appearance last season during his first campaign after transferring from Southampton to Chelsea, primarily due to his hamstring and ankle injuries.

However, the Italian coach expressed confidence in the depth of the Blues' midfield, suggesting that there won't be a need to seek new additions in the January transfer market. At his press conference last Friday, held before the Wolves match, Maresca shared that Lavia, Enzo Fernandez, Levi Colwill, and Cole Palmer were all under consideration due to their uncertain availability.

While Palmer participated in the match, the other three players were unavailable against Wolves. Maresca is optimistic about Colwill and Fernandez returning in time for Saturday’s match against Manchester City at the Etihad.

When asked about Lavia’s injury and potential return, Maresca indicated that there isn't a specific timeframe yet. The team will continue to monitor his situation and, hopefully, within a few weeks, they will see him back on the pitch.

"Probably Levi and Enzo could be available, depends on today’s session,” Maresca said. "We have enough players to cover that situation. At the moment, the intention is not to go for one more midfielder,” he added.

"With the club, the sporting directors, we pay attention if something can happen. We will see in the next 10 days if something happens,” Maresca concluded.
