A teenager has been taken into custody following instances of distressing social media abuse directed at Sophia Weber, wife of Arsenal forward Kai Havertz, after the club's FA Cup defeat.
The culprit who abused the couple finally caught
During the shootout loss at the Emirates on January 12, Havertz missed a penalty, which led to a wave of negative reactions. Sophia, who is anticipating their first child, reported receiving hurtful messages on Instagram.
She shared screenshots of the direct messages on her Instagram story, encouraging her followers to foster a culture of respect and the termed abuse she endured to be shocking.
In response, Hertfordshire Constabulary announced that a 17-year-old boy from St Albans has been arrested under suspicion of sending those malicious messages. The authorities have confirmed that he has been released on bail as their investigation continues. Arsenal Football Club is also taking this matter seriously and has engaged the data technology company to assist in identifying the users involved in this incident.
Earlier, Instagram had taken down the abusive content that violated its policies.
This move follows Arsenal's disappointing exit from the FA Cup at the hands of Manchester United. Havertz was central to the drama during a thrilling match at the Emirates, where he missed the pivotal penalty in the shootout, sealing Arsenal's fate in the competition.
Havertz shared the news in November of last year that he and Sophia were expecting their first child, capturing the moment with heartfelt photos showing her growing baby bump.
Unfortunately, following his recent penalty miss against United, some fans have directed negative and abusive comments toward the couple and their expected baby.
One such fan wrote "I'm gonna come to your house and sl*ughter your baby I'm not even joking just wait."
Another said: "I hope you have a miscarriage."
