Mikel Arteta has shared that Arsenal is proactively seeking a striker to address the gap created by the injuries to forwards Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Jesus, as the team aims to maintain momentum in their title pursuit.
In a fighting display, the Gunners rallied from a goal down to secure a 2-1 victory against North London rivals Tottenham on Wednesday night, with Leandro Trossard scoring the winning goal.
Arsenal in a spot of bother
It was precisely the boost Arteta required after a challenging week that had seen his team suffer a first-leg defeat to Newcastle in the League Cup, exit the FA Cup at the hands of Manchester United, and lose Gabriel Jesus to a long-term injury—just as the Brazilian striker was beginning to find his scoring form.
Jesus' injury has significantly diminished Arsenal's attacking capabilities, especially following Saka's hamstring injury last month.
However, after a commanding victory over Spurs that reduced Liverpool's lead at the top of the Premier League table to just four points, Arteta assured Arsenal fans that he is actively pursuing reinforcements for a strong title challenge.
Arteta wants a striker
In response to Rio Ferdinand's question on TNT Sports about potential striker signings in January, the Gunners boss stated that they would indeed be looking to acquire a striker, due to the significant losses of two key players. With Bukayo likely sidelined for three months and Jesus facing an extended absence, bolstering the squad is crucial.
"Yes for sure because we lost two big players - Bukayo could be out for three months and Gabby is going to be out for a long time too. We are going to try for sure. We are actively looking." he said.
"We have lost two very important players, we have 14 players in the squad and we play every three days. So, we will try and let's see what we can get." Arteta added
The Spaniard will need to navigate a busy schedule of six matches within the next 20 days while considering any potential transfer deals. Arsenal's upcoming fixtures include hosting Aston Villa in the league on Saturday, followed by an important Champions League match at the Emirates the following Wednesday.
