Manchester United in pursuit of their former goalkeeper David De Gea: Reports

The Red Devils are considering re-signing one of their best goalkeepers from the past decade, as per recent reports. Erik Ten Hag's tenure as the manager of Manchester United saw him sign expensive players.

One of those 'expensive' stars included current goalkeeper Andre Onana. The Nigerian has been fairly inconsistent at the English top tier since his arrival. His unforced errors have contributed to many, many losses for Manchester United over the past few seasons.

Manchester United's long-serving goal guard, David De Gea, was replaced by Andre Onana in the summer of 2023. However, the youngster has effectively failed to match De Gea's class. David De Gea had a poignant presence in front of the goal. His ability to play a sweeper keeper and get to the right positions at the right times is what distinguished him from the crowd.

Former Manchester United player Ben Foster asserted that selling De Gea was one of the biggest management blunders the club pulled off in recent times. Some of the latest reports in Spain suggest that the Red Devils are trying to correct their past mistakes. They are reportedly in contact with De Gea for a re-signing.

According to Fichajes, Manchester United is actively contemplating a potential return for David De Gea. The 34-year-old keeper, who spent over a year away from competitive play after leaving Old Trafford, has made a remarkable comeback at Fiorentina.

De Gea's resurgence saw him notch up 10 clean sheets, contributing heavily to Fiorentina's ambitions for a European spot. Currently, La Viola holds the eighth position in the Serie A table, just above AC Milan.

His string of good performances has attracted attention at United, where it is acknowledged that his departure was a mistake, and they are eager to reclaim what they should never have let go. 

That said, the club also remembers De Gea’s several costly errors during his final 24 months in Manchester that cost them many matches. Hence, despite being guilty, Manchester United management may opt for a younger keeping option, keeping the future in mind.

David De Gea made 435 appearances for Manchester United across club competitions in his 12-year tenure at Old Trafford. He won the Premier League in 2012-13, the FA Cup in 2015-16, the EFL Cup in 2015-16 and 2022-23 and the UEFA Europa League in 2016-17 with the Red Devils.
