Manchester City transfer rumours

Pep Guardiola is actively seeking to bolster Manchester City's midfield, with Florian Wirtz and Bruno Guimaraes identified as key targets. The team’s midfield has faced challenges in recent weeks, particularly due to Rodri's extended injury and some inconsistent performances from other central players.

To restore creativity and control in the midfield, City is exploring potential reinforcements in the market, and Wirtz and Guimaraes stand out as promising options, as reported by The Times.

Manchester City eyes Wirtz and Guimaraes

Wirtz is undoubtedly a prime target for the squad, but securing him from Leverkusen in January will be a challenging endeavour, as the Bundesliga side is resolute in keeping their star player. Additionally, competition for Wirtz's signature is intensifying, with Real Madrid actively pursuing the talented midfielder.

Adding to the complexity, Wirtz’s recent partnership with agent Volker Strut, who has strong connections with Spanish clubs, gives Madrid a significant advantage. Struth also represents Toni Kroos, which increases the likelihood of Madrid landing Wirtz, especially if Xabi Alonso, Leverkusen’s current manager, steps in as Real’s head coach next summer.

Newcastle United midfielder Guimaraes has firmly reemerged on Manchester City's radar. The 27-year-old Brazilian has been a target for the Etihad previously, and it’s clear he is keen on joining Guardiola’s side, whether it’s this January or in the summer transfer window.

However, City is expanding its search beyond just Wirtz and Guimaraes. Martín Zubimendi, the £50 million-rated Spanish international, is also on their agenda.

City's determination to secure midfield reinforcements is driven by their current struggles, which are distinctly uncharacteristic for the team. Their recent defeat to Juventus in the Champions League was a stark reminder, marking their seventh loss in just 10 matches across all competitions. They now face a crucial challenge against archrivals Manchester United at the Etihad Stadium this Sunday, and they must turn their fortunes around.
