WATCH: Alexander Isak's long range strike gives Newcastle United the lead over Liverpool

Outside the area, Guimaraes laces a ball to Isak, who is facing van Dijk one-on-one. He chooses to shoot on target from just outside the area rather than take on the Dutchman as he score an incredible goal to give team 1-0 lead.

Liverpool are playing against Newcastle United away from home in the Premier League on Wednesday night after ending a historic week with a 2-0 victory over Manchester City. After defeating the struggling defending champions at Anfield on Sunday, the Reds increased their advantage at the top of the division to nine points, continuing the Arne Slot-led train's momentum on Merseyside.

Similar to 2023–24, Newcastle United has battled for consistency this season, although they cannot attribute their lack of interest to a disastrous injury problem. This season, Eddie Howe's team has defeated Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal, and Chelsea at home, but they only managed a point in their last two games against Crystal Palace and West Ham United.

After the weekend's results, Eddie Howe's team is currently in 11th place. While a victory isn't necessary to finish in the top four right now, a defeat this evening would seriously hurt their chances of winning before the hectic winter months.

When Liverpool advances, Jones weaves the ball into Salah. Mac Allister, a midfielder, tests Pope with a low effort that is caught on the half-volley after the Egyptian's cross is diverted away and lands on the outskirts of the box.  Newcastle appears to be a sleeping giant. However, it's impossible to predict what their ceiling may be if Isak heats up again. Outside the area, Guimaraes laces a ball to Alexander Isak, who is facing van Dijk one-on-one. He chooses to shoot on target from just outside the area rather than take on the Dutchman. It flies into the top of the net with such force that it appears to take Kelleher by surprise.

Alexander Isak continued his incredible record against the top six

The worst nightmare of a Premier League big-six defender is Alexander Isak, who is back on the scoresheet for the Magpies this evening against Liverpool. Even if the Swede's typically explosive form has faltered this season, he still poses a danger in Newcastle United's biggest games.

This evening against Premier League leaders Liverpool, Isak continued his incredible record against the top six by opening the score with a rocket. Isak's goal put him on par with Erling Haaland, who needed three penalties to reach the 10-goal mark versus big-six opponents, whereas Isak needed none.
