Manchester City is prepared to outdo Manchester United and Liverpool in the competition to secure the signature of Bayer Leverkusen standout Jeremie Frimpong.
The 23-year-old initially came through the ranks at Man City but departed the Premier League club without making a senior appearance. Following a successful stint at Celtic, Frimpong made the move to Bayer Leverkusen in 2021.
Frimpong has amassed an impressive record of 26 goals and 36 assists in 149 Leverkusen appearances across all competitions.
He is in a role this season, having already scored once and assisting four times. Such astonishing performance has been noticed by club giants - Manchester City, Manchester United and Liverpool.
Earlier this week, a report indicated that Liverpool and Manchester United are poised to compete in their pursuit to acquire Frimpong. However, Manchester City is also contemplating re-signing the right-back.
According to Football Insider, Frimpong is also a target for Liverpool, as the club is keen on signing him, potentially to transition Trent Alexander-Arnold into a midfield role.
It's worth considering that Erik ten Hag has brought in several Dutch and Eredivisie players to Old Trafford, including Matthijs de Ligt and Joshua Zirkzee.
Does Manchester United need Frimpong?
However, it seems unlikely that Man United would try to outbid City and Liverpool for Frimpong, especially given their recent acquisition of Noussair Mazraoui from Bayern Munich.
Mazraoui has made a strong start at Man Utd, providing Ten Hag with two reliable options at right-back alongside Diogo Dalot. Therefore, it may not be necessary for Man Utd to invest over €40 million (£33.3 million / US$44.6 million) in Frimpong, as these funds could be better utilized to reinforce other areas of the team.
Frimpong is a highly versatile player who can excel in multiple positions, including right-back, wing-back, or right midfielder, offering valuable flexibility for any coach.
Previously, Frimpong's contract included a €40m release clause, but it has now expired, giving Leverkusen the freedom to set any transfer fee. Frimpong is under contract with the reigning Bundesliga champions until June 2028.
