Luis Enrique had a controversial take on Xavi and FC Barcelona. The former Barca player and coach felt that FCB is no more the team they once used to be. The PSG manager felt that the players did not possess defensive quality and knew only to play long balls and weren't even the best at that. He claimed that FCB players played like Eibar.
"Barça are not a dominant team and they are not a defensively good team. They have no defensive quality. They play long balls. Ter Stegen broke the record for long passes. They play like Eibar," said Luis in an interview. In the previous season, PSG beat FCB in the quarterfinal of the UEFA Champions League.
Having played for the iconic franchise and managed them in the past, it seemed like Enrique knew how the team had changed a lot compared to their glory days. He felt that Barca was totally different under Xavi Hernandez. PSG had a match with FCB.
In the first leg, Barca had an upper hand of 3-2. But PSG turned things around in the second leg with a lead of 4-1. It eventually helped them to beat the La Liga Superpower. Before the match, Luis was asked about the challenge he had to ride the troops against a side like FC Barcelona.
He felt it wasn't a challenge given the decline of the team's defensive play under Xavi. Luis felt under Xavi, FCB stuck to playing long balls and weren't even the best side in that regard. He claimed Ter Stegen had a better passing rate in the long balls. His statement went viral after the Leg 2.
The fans felt Luis was not lying and agreed that Barca changed a lot under Xavi. PSG will not be taking on Barca in the group stage of the Champions League. However, if both of them make it to the knockouts of the tournament, there is a chance of them meeting each other once more.
