UEFA said on Tuesday that the 2027 Champions League final cannot take place at the San Siro in Milan because of uncertainty around possible upgrades. The San Siro lost the opportunity to host the final because Milan was unable to make sure that the stadium and its surroundings “would not be affected by refurbishment works,” according to the committee that oversees European football.

A statement from UEFA said, , "As the Municipality of Milano could not guarantee that the San Siro stadium and its surroundings would not be affected by refurbishment works in the period of the 2027 UEFA Champions League final, it was decided not to assign the final to Milan and to re-open the bidding process to appoint a suitable venue, with a decision expected in May/June 2025."

San Siro was selected by UEFA to host the 2027 tournament, subject to the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) submitting a plan to renovate the renowned stadium at a cost of millions of pounds. The schedule, meanwhile, is still unclear because AC Milan and Inter Milan, two of the biggest teams in Serie A, want to move to a new location.

The famous San Siro stadium is owned by the city of Milan, and earlier this month, a proposal to modernize and reconstruct it was turned down by AC Milan and Inter Milan, who also have their home games there.

Mayor of Milan Giuseppe Sala stated both clubs would be willing to revive their initial concept of a new stadium in the near neighborhood of San Siro. The project was forced to be shelved last year due to bureaucratic and political squabbles.

Where can Inter Milan and AC Milan play their games?

In an attempt to relocate beyond the limits of the city of Milan, AC Milan purchased land in the neighborhood of San Donato Milanese earlier this year. The aim was that this would facilitate the process of obtaining building approval.

The villages of Rozzano and Assago, which are located immediately south of Milan, are the target of reigning Serie A champion Inter, who have explored the prospect of constructing on formerly industrial territory in the populated northern suburb of Sesto San Giovanni.
