The Scotland defender Kieran Tierney, who will miss the rest of his country's Euro 2024 campaign due to a hamstring injury, is coming back to Arsenal for treatment. Scotland's hopes of making it to the round of 16 were preserved on Wednesday when they drew 1-1 with Switzerland, with Tierney being carted off.

The Scotland assistant coach John Carver spoke to the reporters and discussed the effects of Tierney’s injury. He said, “He’s got an issue with his hamstring. He’s heading home to be assessed by Arsenal and that’s all I can really say at the moment. They’ll obviously give you updates as they have it, but he’s obviously extremely disappointed.”

Scotland has never made it to the round of 16 at a major tournament, but if it wins its last Group A match against Hungary on Sunday in Stuttgart, it might. Scotland would then have four points, which would secure at least third place. Under the prevailing European Championship structure, four points have always been sufficient to advance to the round of 16.

He added,“If we do progress and we move though the tournament, I’m sure he’ll be back to support us, He’s a young lad, he’s got plenty of time and he’s got to make sure it’s right for his return. It’s a blow because he’s one of our top players. In tournament football you need your best players on the park. When any team loses their best players then it will affect the situation, but it is also an opportunity for somebody else to step in.”

Kieran Tierney set to leave Arsenal in the upcoming transfer window

After his loan stint in Spain, there has been conjecture in recent weeks over Tierney's status with the Gunners. Tierney will rejoin Arsenal this summer, but his future is still up in the air, especially since he appeared to injure his hamstring when playing for Scotland at the UEFA Euro 2024.

Earlier this year, Tierney acknowledged that he might permanently depart the Emirates Stadium in quest of consistent first-team playing time. Tierney departed Celtic in 2019 to finalise a £25 million transfer to Arsenal.
