Kevin De Bruyne expresses his deep disappointment after Belgium's 2-0 defeat against France in the Nations League on Tuesday. He emphasized the need for improvement in various aspects of their game and indicated his frustration during the match. Additionally, there were reports of a tense moment on the sideline where he appeared to express his frustration about quitting the national team.

He reportedly told technical director Frank Vercauteren on the sideline: “I quit, I quit. If the standard we want to reach is the best, but we’re no longer good enough to get to that level, then you have to give everything. If you don't even do that , it's over,” De Bruyne told Belgian TV station VTM.

A member of Belgium's Golden Generation

Kevin De Bruyne was a member of Belgium’s so-called golden generation that reached No. 1 in the world rankings and was among the favourites at major tournaments, but they never made a final. The Belgians lost 1-0 to France in the World Cup semi-finals in 2018 and reached the quarter-finals of the World Cup in 2014 and the European Championships in 2016 and 2021.

De Bruyne, along with Lukaku, represents the last connection to the previous generation but may not be able to continue for much longer, particularly given the impact of injuries during his recent seasons at City.

Gaffer's take on the Skipper

Tedesco assumed the role of coach ahead of Euro 2024, where Belgium again lost 1-0 to France in the round of 16. He is already under pressure due to his negative tactics. De Bruyne emphasized this in his emotional remarks on Monday, stating that Belgium had “too many at the back,” which prevented any connection between the forward players.

Tedesco commended De Bruyne for his winning mentality and did not condemn his outspoken nature as a captain. "He is passionate and understandably disappointed. That's why he expresses himself in such a manner at times," Tedesco remarked.
