Jorge Jesus leaves Al-Hilal after AFC Champions League exit

The 70-year-old veteran coach parted ways with Al-Hilal. His decision followed just four days after the team's defeat to Al-Ahli in the semifinal of the AFC Champions League Elite.

Jorge Jesus, the former Benfica coach who took over in July 2023, guided Al-Hilal to a world-record 34-game winning streak, culminating in the club securing its 19th Saudi Pro League title. However, this season, Al-Hilal finds itself six points adrift of league leader Al-Ittihad, with only five matches left to play.

“The Board of Directors of Al-Hilal Club Company has agreed with the Portuguese head coach of the first football team Jorge Jesus to terminate the contractual relationship between them,” the club posted on social media.

Mohammad Al-Shalhoub will temporarily lead the team as it prepares for the FIFA Club World Cup. Reports from domestic media indicate that a foreign coach is expected to be hired before the four-time Asian champions face Real Madrid in their opening match on June 18.

Jorge Jesus's decision came at a tricky time when various sources were linking him with a move to South America in Brazil. He is in contention for the manager's spot for the national side along with former Real Madrid's Italian manager Carlo Ancelotti.
