Arsenal asked not to give guard of honour

Mikel Arteta's squad has been advised not to give a 'guard of honour' to the new Premier League champions Liverpool. With a few matches still to go in the season, many teams are planning to pay their respect to the champions with this tradition.

Troy Deeney calls out at the bizarre tradition

Liverpool were recently crowned Premier League champions. Traditionally, title-winning teams receive a guard of honour from their opponents during their next match. However, former Watford striker Troy Deeney believes that Arsenal should refrain from performing this gesture when Liverpool visits the Emirates later this month, suggesting it would be a humiliation for the Gunners.

"Chelsea will give Liverpool a guard of honour before tomorrow’s Premier League match at Stamford Bridge. And next weekend, presumably, Arsenal will do the same. But like so many other things in modern football, it’s something I will never understand." Deeney said.

"Frankly, I think it’s a load of old b*****ks. It’s not so much a mark of respect as a humiliation for the team lining up to give the champions a little clap. It is as if Chelsea and Arsenal, and everyone who plays the champs for the rest of the season, are saying, ‘Well done, we’re perfectly happy you beat us. ’" Deeney added.

Having finished short in the Premier League, the Gunners are eyeing their maiden Premier League glory. Arsenal will travel to Parc Des Princes for the second leg of the UEFA Champions League semifinals on May 8th. The Gunners currently trail by one goal in the fixture and will be hoping to turn the tables around come the match day.
