Netherlands manager Ronald Koeman has made the decision to not include Manchester United striker Joshua Zirkzee in his squad for the upcoming Nations League quarterfinal against Spain. In addressing this choice, Koeman suggested that Zirkzee still needs to put in a lot of work to earn his place on the national team.
In an interview with Voetbal, the Dutch coach elaborated on Zirkzee's current form while playing for his club Manchester United.
Zirkzee 'not good enough' for the national side
"He wasn’t in the preliminary selection because I don’t think he’s good enough at the moment. In particular, scanning when turning or passing often goes wrong. Yes, in principle, form and fitness are always leading, but that is not always possible." Koeman said.
"We have a lot of central defenders and midfielders, but we are somewhat limited up front. But even then, I still think that you have to earn your selection, and I think he doesn’t deserve that now, but that could be the case again in another period." Koeman added.
Zirkzee joined the Premier League club Manchester United from Bologna for £36.5 million last summer. He has struggled to make his mark at Old Trafford. With just six goals and two assists in 42 appearances this season, his performance in the Premier League has been particularly lacklustre, managing only three goals in 28 matches.
Joshua Zirkzee's recent performances have prompted a reassessment of his role, leading to his omission from the Netherlands squad. Zirkzee has made six senior appearances since debuting at Euro 2024. Additionally, Casemiro has shared his thoughts on Zirkzee's playing style, suggesting that he may excel more as a number 10 rather than as a traditional striker.
