Manchester City fell from grace this season after enjoying a long, successful stint in European Club Competitions. Pep Guardiola's side not only failed to make an impact in this season's UEFA Champions League but has also performed miserably in the Premier League.
The club is trying its best to avoid a trophyless season as they have made it to the semi-finals of the FA Cup. However, their dismal performances in the Premier League have raised concerns among fans about whether the club based at Etihad will feature in next season's UEFA Champions League.
Manchester City can still make it to the next Champions League
While all is not done and dusted for the Citizens, things are very tight for Pep Guardiola's side, and any further slip-up can potentially be catastrophic for Manchester City and end their participation run at Europe's pinnacle footballing event. Traditionally, the top 4 teams in the Premier League standings at the end of the season directly qualify for the UEFA Champions League.
However, keeping track of Manchester City's current form, it is highly unlikely for the Citizens to hold onto that last qualifying spot. City currently sits in 5th place in the Premier League standings after their matchday 31. Manchester City is just 1 shy of 4th placed Chelsea, who have seen a resurgence this season. If Manchester City even manage to hold on to their fifth place, they can still directly qualify for the Champions League, owing to England being at the top of the UEFA coefficient standings.
Holding onto the 5th and final qualification spot may be a tall order for the Citizens in the absence of key players - Erling Haaland, Rodri and John Stones. The reigning Carabao Cup Champions, Newcastle United, are also aware of their chances to make it through to the Champions League should they topple the Citizens with an extra game in their hands. Hence, Citizens cannot afford to drop any points heading into the final 7 matchdays to qualify for the next Champions League.
